Artist Residency – What I Discovered

During the summer of 2012 I went upstate to Lake George as part of an artist residency. This would be my first experience as part of a residency and it’s true. I was nervous. I’m not a nature girl and since my medium is photography I had no idea what kind of “new work” I would feel inclined to create. Certainly it wasn’t going to consist of flowers and trees.

The residency was sponsored by the artist collective Openings. To give a brief background – Openings believes that the connections between creativity and transcendence foster critical conversations that have the potential to unite individuals across cultural divides.

The director of Openings is an artist by the name of Fr. Frank Sabatte. Yes. He’s a priest who’s part of the Paulist Fathers. The Paulist Fathers was founded by Fr. Isaac Hecker who was friends with Henry Thoreau and was mentored by Ralph Waldo Emerson. A thinker and seeker. The Church of St Paul the Apostle in NYC, which is the mother church of the Paulist Fathers, has had one main goal since its inception – to combine the artistic ideals of the past with the American genius of the present day.

I mention all this as a preface for the images you are about to see. To put it into some kind of context the property on which the residency occurs is called St Mary’s on the Lake. St Mary’s is owned by the Paulist Fathers though I must emphasize the residency itself is in no way religious and/or geared towards those of faith. It really is an open space for artists to come, make new work, and to talk about their medium and ideas.

The building which houses the artists is three stories though the rooms the artists occupy are on the first and second floors only. As I was soon to discover the third floor is for storage. The day after my arrival everyone, after breakfast, broke and went their separate ways to explore and create. I was left semi panicked and, with sweaty palms, I wondered “how am I going to fill the hours between now and lunch?”. One of the artists (who had been on this residency before) had recommended I explore the third floor of my abode. At first feeling reluctant and then having the feeling of having no other option – I relented.

I cautiously walked up the stairs with fear of being discovered. I knew permission had been granted but, in my mind, there’s something about exploring an abandoned space that leaves one feeling like the action is forbidden. Like the space itself feels intruded upon and the visit an imposition. Truth be told the more I wandered the more enthralled I became. I lost myself up there. Between the dust, sunlight, oddly colored rooms, cracked paint, abandoned belongings and displaced items I was in wonderland. The images are more aesthetic than intellectual but (and maybe just for that reason) I love them just the same. I can’t help but be curious still. How did these things end up here? Who do they belong do? Why were they left? Why are there only lamps in one room and only chairs in another? What’s the psychology behind this? Is it supposed to make sense? To an intruder it raises more questions than answers …

Camus in New York City

Last year November a friend of mine was performing at the Museum of the City of New York as part of the Folk City exhibition. Following his show and after many heartfelt hugs Eric introduced me to the curator of Folk City – Stephen Petrus. Stephen, once the formalities were through, mentioned he’d be doing a walk through of the exhibition the following week and inquired on whether or not I would be interested in attending. Absolutely! and without hesitation. The walk through was fantastic and it was cool to hear how Stephen had succeeded in obtaining original Bob Dylan hand written lyrics for the show. The entire exhibition was laden with New York music history and I was enthralled.

Following the walk through the plan was to meet Eric for dinner at an Italian family style restaurant on the west side. To be honest I thought it would be just the three of us. Knowing Eric was leaving town soon I was looking forward to saying my last farewells. Unbeknownst to me the dinner was actually a brainstorming session for a Camus event which, at this point, I had no idea what that was. As the evening got underway we were joined by three other people who were enthusiastic and full of ideas on how to make the Camus thing happen. I, being the introvert I am, sat and listened and slowly began to understand that 2016 marked the 70th anniversary of Camus’ one and only visit to New York. Stephen, Eric and these three strangers were plotting on how to put an itinerary together and who and what spaces could be enlisted to help. Despite my ignorance dinner was lovely and lively and the wine was pretty good too.

A few weeks later I was in Los Angeles visiting family for Thanksgiving when I received a call. It was Eric phoning from the Netherlands. We spoke of Camus, who yes I knew but only from The Stranger which I read in both high school and college, when finally the Camus question arrived. I knew it was coming and was trying / hoping to evade it but then … there it was. Eric “so what can you do?” What can I do? As far as assisting with the events? The exhibition? I struggled and the pause was palpable when I suddenly heard myself say “I can do the social media stuff”. And that was that. I was in charge of the social media campaigns. From beginning to end. Creating the social media pages. Photographing the events. Live tweeting. Posting images on Facebook and Instagram. The whole shebang.

Looking back – words cannot express how grateful I am to both Stephen and Eric for introducing me to Alexandre from Camus’ estate. The three of them had full confidence in me, my work, and from even before day one, from planning and plotting to the execution of the three week long celebration, were always a pleasure to spend time with. I hope one day life brings the three of us together again under similar happy circumstances.

Candid recording session Polariods

Nearly a year ago I received a gift in the mail. It was a Polaroid Land camera that my cousin had found up in Maine. Not being sure what I was going to do with the camera it sat around my NYC apartment for months unused and collecting dust. That is – until one night while at a party in the East Village the host (and birthday boy) surprised me by handing me two boxes of Fuji black and white 3000 Polaroid film. Turns out he has the same camera and had extra film laying about that he encouraged me to experiment with. And so I did. Last weekend I went to Brooklyn to a friend’s recording session where I created these images:

The Silverlake Lounge features Goldenboy – the must see band this Fall

In early August I was in Los Angeles for a brief visit where I spent the better part of, one of my days, with my friends in Goldenboy. As always they were kind enough to give me a full access pass to a “day in the life of” a band living in Silverlake. The first few images were taken at their studio where our evening began. Later we made the trek down the street to the Silverlake Lounge where they performed one of their best shows ever. Having just returned from tour it makes sense that the band was at its peak of tightness but the new songs are something like I’ve never heard from them before. They’re exploring unexpected depths of which left me moved, emotional and excited for their next record which will (hopefully) be released in the Fall. Even if the record isn’t out – fingers crossed it will be – they will be touring so be sure to catch them when they come through your town. NYC CMJ – YES!!!!

Allah Las with the Black Angels at Webster Hall

From the first moment I heard the track “Don’t You Forget It”, which just happened to end up in my inbox via an email from Rcrd Lbl, – I knew I had to see Allah Las when they passed through NYC. Having a Californian 60’s influence in their sound but being original enough to stand out from most bands I come across these days I decided I wanted to create images that represent the sound and form of the music. More so than trying to catch a perfect “in focus” photo of the band. Here’s what I captured:

I was recently at Don Pedro in Brooklyn where The Whims were performing. I saw this backdrop and before I knew it … a photo shoot was in progress. I love it when spontaneous things like this happen:

Departure into Frenzy Into Folly

This summer I took a little departure from the commercial work and focused on a new venture. Co-curation! Michael Berube and I worked on an exhibition entitled “Frenzy Into Folly” which was featured in the Church of St Paul The Apostle in Midtown New York. The church, having began construction in 1876, has had a long standing tradition of supporting artists. This coupled with the challenge of showing and curating a show that preserves the architectural and human integrity of the space made this departure a fantastic experience. Not only did I co-curate but I featured a piece in the exhibit which references media frenzy and then proceeds to compare the similarities between Catholicism and Islam. Here are a couple of press videos that were made (extra special thanks to Joey Kilrain who shot and edited them) along with an image of the canvas I presented in Frenzy Into Folly:

Closing Couture Fashion Week at the Waldorf Astoria

For the second year in a row ALICAT Avril Lemieux has showcased her collection and closed Couture Fashion Week at the Waldorf Astoria. Last year the Waldorf was hosting a number of dignitaries and though this year there weren’t any Bill Clinton sightings, as there were the previous, those in attendance witnessed something even more compelling – the unveiling of ALICAT’s new line “Stolen Loot”. Influenced by high rollers, follies girls, and robbers who appear to be free but in reality are chained to their game of money and greed the line features, interestingly enough – diamond studded handcuffs. Instead of capturing the runway action ALICAT allowed me full access for the day which enabled me to photograph the calm, the chaos and everything that fell in between. Here’s how our day turned out …
