and the link between us is Robert’s friend and (I might add very talented) singer/songwriter Bobby Long. Back in October of 2009 I photographed him while he was passing through NYC on his first American tour. There were a number of images that were produced during the shoot and I’m often surprised when I stumble upon them online and discover that they’ve been incorporated into promotional material. Here’s an ad for two shows Bobby did in Paris that I particularly like:
Oklahoma Today magazine (real print!) has featured my image of Beau Jennings in the September/October 2011 issue.

Thanks to Baldwin Hill Farm for the use of their property and for towing us out of the mud.
All images were taken the day Hurricane Irene was due to hit NYC. Thankfully it made for a great lighting situation.

Less than a week after I’d posted on this blog that ALICAT Avril Lemieux was destined for Lincoln Center we found out that she’d been invited to show at New York’s Couture Fashion Week at the Waldorf Astoria. Okay – so it wasn’t Lincoln Center (yet – that’s next year) but DAMN! Couture Fashion Week?!!? This was definitely unexpected and I think the news left all of us on team ALICAT nervous and excited and well … all those things you’d expect to feel when you can see your hard work paying off. When I arrived at the Waldorf Astoria I found everyone working for the event to be courteous and well-organized. Immediately entering the Grand Ballroom I was shown how to access the backstage area where I’d find ALICAT and crew. Though things were moving at the usual faster than fast pace I managed to capture a few shots though I was really saving myself for the runway show. The lighting in the Grand Ballroom was, uh sigh, just unbelievable. I’ve tried to show in a few images the beauty and saturation of the colors though I don’t think my pictures do it justice. But I digress. First up on the runway was ALICAT Avril Lemieux From The Gods Rise Of The Beetle Collection followed by Romero Bryan who ended up closing Couture Fashion Week with his line. I wish I could say more about Romero’s collection but I don’t know much about it. Hopefully he’ll accept my friend request on FB so he can tell me more about his work.

I remember the first time I saw Lost In The Trees. I was absolutely astounded that they actually had a tuba player in the band. My posting on facebook the next day went something like “Never in my life! I mean A TUBA PLAYER?!!?” Ok so that may sound somewhat naive but still – I was impressed. The second time I saw them perform was at Joe’s Pub. The sound at Joe’s Pub, in case you’ve never been, is exquisite. I could hear the harmonies, I could hear each and every instrument and instead of being struck by the fact there was a tuba player I was moved by the beauty of the music and the hauntingly dark lyrics. By the time Lost In The Trees came back to NYC for a third time I was, and am, a full-fledged supporter. Below are a few images from that third show at Mercury Lounge:

ALICAT Avril Lemieux featured her new designs, while incorporating a number of pieces by designer Nailah Lymus, this past Saturday during NY’s fashion week. It’s impressive to see where ALICAT’s come in just a year and a half. In February 2010 she featured her handbags in a runway show at a lounge in midtown. February 2011 found her again in a lounge but this time featuring a clothing line that coincided with her handbags in the West Village. Seven months later we find her at DANY studios showcasing 15 looks from “The Gods – Rise Of The Beetle Collection”. And just like her collection there’s nothing to stop her from rising. I’ve no doubt it’s just a matter of time before she’s dominating Lincoln Center. Here are a number of images I captured backstage and a few from her runway show:

I guess I shouldn’t have, being as that it’d been awhile since Cibo Matto had performed, but I was genuinely surprised to see the entire floor swell when they appeared on stage. At first it seemed strange. Standing in a bowling alley where people were actually bowling. Bodies were scattered around the seemingly large room so it was difficult for me to gage who was there for the music and who was there for the game. But as soon as Yuka Honda and Miho Hatori appeared the noise of the balls hitting the pins disappeared, the chatter ceased, the room felt ten times too small and I knew it was time. Time to decide whether or not I was up for the fight towards the front of the stage. I won’t bore you with the logistical details but here are a few of my favorite images from that evening. And oh, by the way. Miho and Sean Lennon performed one of the most beautiful renditions of “Moonchild” I’ve ever heard …
